Calisthenics levels

Five chalk grades, White to Red. Each one is a short list of skills held to a written standard. No points to farm, no belt to buy.

Calisthenics has no shared scale. One app calls you advanced after ten pull-ups, a forum thread says you are a beginner until your first muscle-up. BARCROSS settles it with grades that mean the same thing everywhere: a handful of marker skills per level, each with a standard you either meet or you don't.

There are two layers. Every move in the tree carries a grade, which says how hard the move is. You carry a chalk, which says what you have proven: all the marker skills of that grade, earned in order. A Blue move is not a Blue athlete. The athlete is Blue when the Blue markers are done.

Find yours in 90 seconds

The quick test asks for a few numbers you already know or can check today: strict pull-ups, push-ups in two minutes, an L-sit hold and a dead hang. It predicts your chalk conservatively and shows what stands between you and the next one.

A prediction is a starting point, not a title. To make a grade official, you film the marker skills and a judge checks them against the written standard. Training is free. The judge's time is what costs money.

Standards by movement

One signature move per grade for each family, with the standard that counts as owning it. A dash means that chain has no move at that grade.

How long does each grade take?

It depends on where you start, what you weigh and how steadily you train, so treat these as rough ranges for someone training three times a week, not promises. White is a day-one grade for most healthy adults. Green, with its eight pull-ups and thirty-second holds, usually takes months of regular work for a true beginner.

Blue is where the skills get real: a muscle-up, a tuck planche, an advanced tuck front lever. For most people that means a year or more. Yellow and Red are measured in years. That is the point: the grade only means something if it is hard to get.

Questions

How many pull-ups is good?

On the BARCROSS scale, one strict pull-up is a milestone, and three clean sets of eight is the standard for the Green pull-up. The Green chalk asks for eight pull-ups alongside a 30 second wall handstand and a 30 second crow. Past that, pull-ups stop being the goal and become the base for the muscle-up and the lever.

What counts as advanced in calisthenics?

On this scale, Yellow: five muscle-ups, a 10 second one-leg front lever and a 10 second straddle planche. Red, the top grade, asks for six muscle-ups, a 10 second full front lever and a 10 second full planche. Very few athletes ever hold Red.

Can a beginner have a grade?

Yes. White is designed to be finishable on day one: hanging, rows and planks, no inversions. Starting with a grade gives you a ladder to climb instead of a vague goal.

Does bodyweight change the standard?

No. The standard is the same for everyone, and that is deliberate. Lighter athletes often find levers and planches easier, heavier athletes often move faster through strength-based work, and the grades reward both by asking for skills across every family.
